Manual therapy is the foundation that houses all different modalities of soft-tissue work. Ranging from massage, FST, IASTM, joint mobilization, myofascial work, and so much more, its end goal is to decrease pain and increase mobility to help get the client started regaining motor control.
In massage school, we were taught a lot about the musculoskeletal system and how to treat it. The myofascial system was barely touched upon as it's still relatively new with its research, but the research shows how important it is and maybe even more so, being that the fascial system surrounds everything from each muscle to our bones. Along with the myofascial system are the nerves it holds and the role they play with how our body receives and deals with pain. This is why my treatments revolve greatly around the myofascial and nervous system rather than just thinking purely on muscles and muscle groups - you can't relax a tight muscle when the fascia surrounding it is tight, and you cant relax tight fascia if the nerves attached to it are in overdrive.
